Pisces Season Playlist: Are you ready for the feels trip?

By Tanay Adams

We’re almost a month into Pisces season, and by now you’ve either been spending all of your free time daydreaming unlikely scenarios, finding yourself fantasizing about a relationship you don’t *really want, or feeling extra nostalgic right now; either way Pisces season can bring forth an array of emotion as the season brings in a gush of water energy. Pisces is the 12th sign of the zodiac; represented by twin fishes swimming in opposite directions, but connected by their tails, which is an accurate representation of the energy of Pisces. Having one foot grounded in the world of responsibility, work, and order, and the other, in a world of what if’s, whimsy, and realizing that nothing truly matters at all, is the dilemma of Pisces season. If you’ve experienced the urge to drop everything, quit every responsibility, and travel to a new location; you’re officially on the feels trip and riding the wave of this season. Of all the water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) and signs of the entire zodiac wheel, Pisces is the only sign not given a weapon to defend itself. Cancers are crabs; given hard shells to protect their soft insides from predators, and Scorpios have stingers that won’t even allow a predator to get near them, but what is the fish’s first line of defense? Their fins and tails, for which they use to swim away, or as I like to call it – escapism. This is the pull you’re feeling right now to get away from anything that is causing you discomfort or interrupting the world you’re trying to create around you.

As a Piscean, I can ALWAYS tell if a music artist is a Pisces because oftentimes their music sounds like water, or evokes the feeling of being near water. For the Black women who are not able to physically escape this month, who are treading the water of their emotions, and struggling to create around them the vision they see for themselves in their minds; I offer you 5 Black Pisces Women whose music you can escape into, until you are ready to come back down.

1) Rihanna (February 20th)

Now – though Rhianna is a Pisces, please be mindful that she has an Aries moon and Rising. This dominant fire energy means her water is interpreted as hot steam, which is what we can thank all of her summer bops for. If you’re in the phase of Pisces season where you are mentally on vacation, looking your very best in a bathing suit, but physically at work and nowhere near water; may I suggest:

  • Work (feat. Drake)
  • You Da One
  • Rude Boy
  • Sex with Me

2) Erykah Badu (February 26th)

To me, she is Queen Pisces Badu, and if you don’t know then you need to find out this season the power of this woman’s rhyme and flow. If you’re in the phase of Pisces season where you are searching for some deep answers to some deep questions about life, the world around you, and your place in it; may I offer:

  • Window Seat
  • On & On
  • Bag Lady
  • Didn’t Cha Know

3) Nina Simone (February 21st) *my birthday twin*

The High Priestess of Soul! Nina’s voice evokes the same feelings of Sunday morning within me. She is pound cake sitting on the counter, grits and butter boiling in a pot, and the “amen” screamed back at the pastor from the congregation. Along with being revolutionary, she signifies that delicate balance between finding power within your emotions, but not letting your emotions overpower you. If you’re in the phase of Pisces season where you are lost in the emotional sauce, but strangely feeling powerful within that deep emotion and nostalgia; may I recommend:

  • Feeling Good
  • Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood
  • Little Girl Blue
  • Blackbird

4) Corinne Bailey Rae (February 26th)

For those who “coincidentally” find themselves in relationships or longing for one around this time every year, Ms. Corinne Bailey Rae is exactly who you need to be listening to. Her music is a beautiful reflection of the appeal of love and all of the good things that come with it. The beginning of two souls becoming one, the simple comfort of their name on your phone, and the excitement of possibilities; all is the sound of her music. If you are in the phase of Pisces season where you are missing being in love and fantasizing about what love has for you in the future; I advise listening to:

  • Enchantment
  • Breathless
  • Call Me When You Get This
  • Like a Star

5) K. Michelle (March 4th)

She says it best in her song Birthday, “Don’t fight me, I’m a Pisces, birthday cake up on his white T / Turn downs unlikely, he checkin’ for me like I’m Nike”. If I’m listening to K. Michelle, but I told y’all I was talking to someone; chances are they’re cancelled and I’m back on my bullshit again. K. Michelle is THE girl for bossing yourself up and truly embracing the soft and savage parts of being a Black woman. If you’re in the phase of Pisces season where you are in love with yourself, and looking for someone to share that with, but everyone’s playing in your face like you’re not the 1,2 and 3; may I propose:

  • Love ‘Em All
  • Cry
  • Going Under
  • Hard To Do

6) Jhené Aiko (March 16th)

The mermaid herself! I often say no one can sigh on the beat like she can, and when I say that Pisces can capture the feeling of water in their voice and music; she does this like no other. Jhené taps into the imagination and sensuality of the fish, and encourages us to believe in the beautiful things we create within our head, and then project this beauty into the world and onto the people that we love, so that they can live in beauty too. If you’re in the phase of Pisces season where you are living more in your head than you are aloud, and daydreaming possibilities has become your favorite pass time; may I submit

  • Blue Dream
  • The Pressure
  • Magic Hour
  • Bed Peace (feat. Childish Gambino)

As Black women, oftentimes the only people who truly understand us are other Black women, and regardless of who’s on your playlist this season, make sure you make room for these Black sirens who exist in this energy 24/7; 365 days a year. Happy escaping to you all, and enjoy a soulful Pisces season! I’ll see y’all soon for Aries season!
