WAP: Women Ain’t Playin

Work is stressful, home is stressful, life is stressful, and overall between prayer and music, sometimes I feel like I am hanging on by a thread. But let me tell you about ChloexHalle, Lianne La Havas, and Victoria Monet. This world does not deserve black women, and that’s a hill on which I own real estate. I am rooted in the output of black women, and the music created during this era of self-isolation has been magical, to say the very least. Meghan and Cardi collaborated, Summer Walker released new music, we’ve got the first City Girls project since JT was released, and Flo Milli is killing the game. Here are some of my recent fave releases:

ChloexHalle, continue to dwell on higher planes than a lot of their peers. It is so beautiful to see traditional artist development and just sheer talent. These two sisters write from their hearts and experiences. Parkwood allows them to be creatively free and learn and grow their artistry. Rarely do I go up for the back half of the album, but theirs is as strong as it is well-produced. I was a fan after their debut album, The Kids Are Alright, and this new album is just everything! It is inspirational, fun, feel good, pulls at the heartstrings, and makes you appreciate the power of expression.

In my opinion, Lianne La Havas’ latest studio album is the album of the year. A clear journey of ups and downs, love and realization, and just overall growth. Her sultry and dynamic voice and talent is one that cannot be denied. She gave an interview saying that she had to become confident in her own voice, and you can tell from the opening track that this Lianne is unlike anything she’s sung before. The UK native gained a fan from me through her covers many years ago, and she really took her time with this album. It is perfect in every way.

Victoria Monet is stepping into the spotlight. The singer-songwriter released a project that hits hard on the very first listen. She is definitely giving the grown woman vibes, and I can appreciate the subjects for which she lends her beautiful voice. She’s used her pen for some great sounds, and her own work is just magical. Her journey is inspirational, and I am so glad she’s gaining traction and love. She is here to stay.
